These graphs depict customs duties as a percentage of federal government revenue in Britain (1821 - 1964), France (1847 - 1988), and Brazil (1937 - 1985). Note that both Britain and France collected a much smaller percentage of government revenue from customs duties in the 1800s than the US. In France it was significantly lower and not much different from what prevails in there today. The pattern is Brazil is very similar to the path followed by the US after 1940.
